Teen Makeup 101. How to Start Your Makeup Journey

Teen makeup may not be as simple as it seems, especially so when you’re just about starting. There’s a different brush for every part of your face, and choosing the perfect shade is as hard as the next science experiment. There are so many colours and products to choose from, that the sheer variety can feel overwhelming, if not impossible!

We have all been there! Here are some nifty tips for teen makeup so you know how to look good and naturally so.

Teen Makeup Tip 1 Don’t skip your skincare

Always remember: the secret to great makeup is great skin. Before applying any product, clean your face thoroughly and moisturize. Not only does this give your makeup a smoother and more flawless effect, but it also benefits the skin. Treat your face like a canvas, and makeup as your paint. Start clean and fresh, then take it from there.

And never forget the golden rule of skincare: don’t sleep with makeup on! Your skincare and makeup products can attract and absorb dirt and bacteria throughout the day, and if you go to bed without cleaning your face, you may risk pimples or clogged pores.

Teen makeup and foundations

Tip 2 – Go easy on your base.

Using a foundation may feel too much, and honestly, the perfect shade is hard to find. Besides, a foundation may feel too heavy on the skin and may clog your pores, especially if you have oily or acne-prone skin. You can opt for alternatives such as BB cream or a tinted moisturizer. These products are lightweight, and they often have SPF to protect your young skin from sun damage. They are also great for hydration so that you can have medium coverage and skincare in one.

Teen Makeup Tip 3 – Don’t rush into lipsticks

You may be dying to wear red lipstick but we’d recommend holding out a little longer! Lipsticks contain formulas that can dry out your lips, and certain shades can also make you look older. Instead, try using lip gloss or a tinted lip balm. They give your lips a pop of colour while keeping them hydrated!

Teen makeup and blush

Tip 4 – Use blush, but take it easy

Adding rosy tint to your cheeks gives your skin a radiant glow. But when it comes to blush, less is always more. Go light on its application and work your way to give your face a rosy glow. The key is to look fresh, not extra flushed.

Teen Makeup Tip 5 – Your eye makeup should not be over the top

Yes, there is such a thing as too much eye makeup. Eyeliners are tricky to apply, so a tip for beginners is to try using small strokes when applying them. As for mascara, always apply a thin coat on your upper lashes only and avoid applying to your lower lashes, as these tend to smudge through the day. Curl your upper lashes first before applying mascara, and you’re all good to go! If you want to keep the curl without the dramatic look, you may opt for clear formulations.
