We completely understand that applying eyeshadow can be one of the more tricky parts of a makeup look. Not only are there many colours to choose from, but there is a wide range of brushes to choose from too.
The good news is that as someone who might be applying makeup for the first time, choosing and applying your preferred eyeshadow is actually much easier than you think.
In this blog, we’ll show you how you can create a natural eyeshadow look in just eight easy steps.
1. Neutral Colours and Darker Shades
In simple terms, you’ll only ever need two colours of eyeshadow to create a natural eyeshadow look. You’ll need a base that’s similar to your skin colour, and another that’s a few shades darker.
You might be able to get away with choosing whichever colour you like, a neutral hue will always look the most natural.
2. Brushing Lightly Through the Base Colour
Using your eyeshadow brush, hold it between the thumb, index finger, and the middle finger of your dominant hand.
Brush the tips of the bristles lightly across the base colour which will pick up some pigments on the brush.
One quick tip – it’s always better to start with less product and add more, so ensure you don’t press the brush too hard into the eyeshadow.

3. Tap the Brush to Remove Excess Powder
There often are times when little specks of eyeshadow can get caught on the surface of your brush. This will impact the quality of your application often resulting in it being uneven.
To avoid this issue, we recommend gently tapping on the side of your brush against the palette or a hard surface such as your bathroom sink.
4. Applying the Base Colour
Apply the base colour all over your eyelid by sweeping the brush in a back and forth motion across your eyelid, starting from your lash line and blending it up to your eyebrow.
If necessary, we’d suggest applying more eyeshadow to the brush than usual to ensure you get an even colour. We’d recommend concentrating the colour along your lash line.
5. Dust & Tap
Once you’ve finished applying the base eyeshadow colour, we’d recommend sweeping your brush across your darker colour first. As the darker eyeshadow will typically show up better than the base colour you’re using, we’d recommend trying to pick up less of the darker shade instead.
6. Apply Between Your Brow and Eyelid
Sweep your eyebrow brush in the shape of a half-moon that runs from the outside of your eye and roughly three-quarters of the way down the crease of your eyelid.
We’d recommend avoiding putting the dark shade on the very inner corner of your eye because it will make your eyes look smaller.

- Repeat for the Other Eye
It’s always best practice to focus on one eye at a time, rather than switching between the two as it can tend to lead to misapplication.
When you’re applying your eyeshadow on your second eye, try and make it look as similar as you can for the first eye. Compare them at the end and make sure they match.
8. Coating With Mascara
Finally, eyeshadow powder can often cling to your lashes, making them look lighter than normal. To counter this, swipe on some mascara. Trust us – it works!
To do this, we’d suggest brushing the side of the mascara wand against the tube to wipe off any excess, hold it at the base of your eyelashes and wiggle it slightly. To finish, sweep the brush up the length of your eyelashes to the top.
