Did you know that a lot of your hair troubles start at the scalp? A clean scalp is like a canvas for beautiful hair. Only when it is clean, can it absorb the right vitamins and minerals and effectively enhance your mane. But, when your scalp is dirty or has clogged pores it can lead to an increase in sebum production, dandruff, itchiness and hair fall.
Do you have a sensitive scalp? Whether its down to the shampoo you use or the way you dry your hair, these 5 ways are the route to gloriously, healthy hair.
1. Buy the right hair care
It is extremely important for sensitive scalps to use mild and gentle shampoos as your skin is already dry. This means shopping for a brand that makes conscious decisions on ingredients, avoids toxins or any other elements that can make your scalp even dryer.
Choose hair care that is made for sensitive skin and is hypoallergenic. The formulation should ideally avoid sulfates, as these can dry out your scalp further. Have a sensitive scalp but dry ends? Apply an extra conditioning treatment to your ends so they get the nourishment they need.
Some people even use two different types of shampoos – one for the scalp and slightly more moisturising version for their ends. Regardless of the regime you settle with, make sure to experiment with a few till you find the one.

2. Choose natural air over a hair dryer
So, you already knew how air drying is best for your hair, sensitive scalp or not. However, when you have a sensitive or itchy scalp, adding heat to the mix will make it more parched and dry.
When air drying is not possible, try and absorb as much moisture off your hair with your towel and then blow dry at the lowest heat setting on your dryer. Try committing to drying your hair the natural way a couple of times in the week to give your scalp a much needed break from the heat.
3. Styling a sensitive scalp
We’ve already established how heat isn’t a great idea for your hair, more so when you have a sensitive scalp. But, what happens when you style your hair without heat? Back combing or tight ponytails tug at your scalp and not the ideal for regular days. Love using styling mousse and gels? Styling products can start to build up on your scalp, blocking your pores and irriating the skin further.
Do you colour your hair? You may consider moving to a less harsh colourant that comes without ammonia. Try and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals and give enough breaks between your colouring appointments to let your scalp breathe.

4. Choose the right hair accessories
Everything from the hat you wear to the scrunchies you use affects your hair and scalp. Rough fabrics by nature will be harsh on your hair and will not let it breathe. Fancy those pearl clips you saw on Instagram? Clips and hair pins are another no-go for those with sensitive scalps.
If you are wondering what to use, try switching to natural fibres such as silk. Plenty of companies now make silk pillowcases(great for both your skin and hair!), scrunchies and accessories that make worthy hair-investments!
5. Keep stress at bay
It may feel like stress is the cause for most problems in your life, but a busy, anxious mind can worsen your scalp situation. Many allergies are also triggered with stress and can affect both the skin on your body and your scalp. It may be as simple as taking a few days off work or doing something that you really enjoy like sketching, gardening or meditation!
If your sensitive scalp is troubling you continuously, we highly recommend seeing your medical practitioner who can recommend the course forward.
